King Kong (2005)

This movie was mainly boring with a hint of adventure and excitement about halfway through and near the end, where King Kong scales the tower, naturally.

As many people tell me, “A 3-hour movie that should have taken 2 hours or less to view”. The slow scenes were way to slow, making the movie seem to drag on for way longer than I was ever anticipating in a film.

The movie starts out with film makers going to an island to shoot the movie. As it turns out, Jack Black (who plays Carl Denham) is the director of the ‘film’, and he is also one of the very good actors in this film, aside from Adrian Brody (who plays Jack Driscoll) being extremely talented in this film as well.

Ann Darrow (played by Naomi Watts) is a wonderful, multi-dimensional character in this film, and Naomi Watts does a fantastic job portraying that personality.

This movie is boring for about 2/3 of the entire film, but the other 1/3 does make up for the utterly and fantastically boring parts by Peter Jackson putting as much action as he can in one segment of a film. Very nicely done.

I just think that Peter Jackson tried to hard. He made the perfect trilogy with Lord of the Rings, but what happened in this movie? This is does not feel like the Peter Jackson I met in another fantasy film before King Kong - not at all.

Maybe my standards were too high for this movie, but to me it just seemed too overdone by the media and not a very quality movie overall.

Try, try again Peter Jackson.

The Island (2005)

You're special. You have a very special purpose in life. You've been chosen. The Island awaits you.

This is the first line of the movie, and boy is this movie 'special'! From the first opening sequence, you are pulled in with Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson) in their habitat.

At first, you think, "Was I just thrown into the novel 'The Giver'?". Right down to the same suits they all wear to the future-like setting and perfect order to their surroundings, one would think that it is just like the novel "The Giver". However, it is a much different story.

When I first saw this movie, I thought that Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta were robots, not 'normal' humans. After watching the first half-hour of the film, I was vaguely surprised that I was dearly wrong, however along the right tracks with them not being ‘fully’ human.

Ewan McGregor gives superb acting in this movie along with Scarlett Johansson. Most of the movie was running, jumping, and climbing, but the acting part was still there. Moreover, of course, there cannot be a blockbuster hit without a love scene between two special people, can there?

Of course, like any 'normal' action movie, this one was no exception. It went a little over the top with all of the 'action' floating around, especially with the Truck/Semi chase scene. The part with the gigantic dumb bells was somewhat cool, actually, but the whole 14-car pileup in the middle of the freeway was a bit unrealistic. I mean, where did all of the fire come from? The asphalt?

Overall, I think I would recommend this movie to anyone who can sit through 2 hours and 15 minutes of a movie with a few bloody and/or just plain disturbing scenes. The scene with the “eye mites” that are placed on Lincoln Six Echo and climb into his eyelid while his eye is held forcibly open comes to mind first. If you can sit through that without feeling even a bit squeamish, then you are good to go.

The Island (2005)
Running Time: 2 Hours, 16 Minutes
Genre: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller
MPAA: PG-13 - For intense sequences of violence and action, some sexuality and language.
